In 1806,  Napoleon made his decision to erect a memorial, a Temple de la Gloire de la Grande Armée. It is built in the Neo-Classical style and was inspired by the Maison Carrée at Nîmes, a well-preserved Roman temple. After the fall of Napoleon, King Louis XVIII determined that the structure would be used as a church, dedicated to Mary Magdalene. Today, the Madeleine is affiliated with a Benedictine abbey, and masses and fashionable weddings are still celebrated here. It is located in the 8th arrondissement, and near, gourmet quality food: Fauchon, Hediard, Ladurée…

The square Place Denfert-Rochereau is named after Pierre Denfert-Rochereau, the French commander who organized the defense at the siege of Belfort during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). It is dominated by the Lion of Belfort statue (a smaller version of the original in the town of Belfort) by Frédéric Bartholdi (remembered mainly for designing the Statue of Liberty). The square is located in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, in the Montparnasse district where is Paris Catacombs museum.
